Tips for Choosing the Right Daycare Center for Your Little One

As a parent, you want to do the best for your child. And choosing a daycare center is an important yet stressful step in their journey towards early education and learning.

Not sure where to begin? We’ve got you covered. Here are five tips you need to follow to find the best daycare center for your little one:

Get Recommendations

Many new parents don’t realize how complex the process of finding a daycare center can be. Many times, it takes people a couple of months to find the right place. Not to mention tons of phone calls and visits. One of the best ways to speed up the process and still end up with a great daycare center is to get recommendations.

Reach out to friends, family members, or colleagues who have kids. They’ll be more than happy to give you a complete rundown of their experiences: the good and the bad. If you don’t have any parents in your social circle, read detailed reviews left by parents on a daycare center’s website. You can also leverage community groups on platforms like Reddit or Facebook to get unbiased opinions on a daycare center.

Know What to Assess During a Visit In-person

Once you’ve shortlisted a couple of daycare centers, ask if you can visit the center in person. The important thing here is to know what to assess.

Safety should always come first. Are all entry/exit points secured? Is there a police officer or security guard at the entrance? Does the daycare center have security cameras? If yes, who has access to them?

Then consider whether the daycare center has enough resources to handle emergencies. Do they have a nurse or trained practitioner to handle health emergencies? If a hospital visit is necessary, what is the protocol?

Pay Attention to Hygiene Standards

Next, ask about the daycare facility’s hygiene regulations and protocols. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. For instance, you can ask:

  • How often do you wipe down shared surfaces?
  • How do you dispose of a child’s nappy?
  • Do you check temperatures to prevent the spread of disease or infection?

Overall, make sure the space is clean and hygienic.

Check Staff-to-child Ratios

Another important step is checking the staff-to-child ratios. You don’t want to send your child to a daycare center that’s too crowded. So choose a facility with lower ratios. This is especially true if you have an infant. They will need dedicated attention and care.

Consider Child Engagement Approach

What is the daycare center’s approach to child engagement? Are the children continuously supervised or left on their own? Understanding this will help you make the right decision.

While parenting preferences vary, a moderate approach to child engagement is recommended. Simply put, children must be supervised but also allowed to explore. Check for a mix of structured educational activities and free play, along with daily outdoor time.

Remember that a daycare center should give you complete information about their approach, so you can move forward with confidence.
